January Fun...

Lindsay at a birthday party at Fly Studios...
she loved it.
Trapezes and swinging from long clothes...
just like a fairy.
 Lindsay and baby Brooke
 Ears are pierced...
the sparkle on her ears tells it all.
She was brave and had the moral support of her BFF Sofie...
The anxiety leading up to it was
enough to make her want to chicken out...
but she was brave and very pleased
with herself at the end...
I think she surprised herself...
 A girl and her dog...
Kendal and Terra
Checking out the scenery before our lunch date,
Lindsay and Kendal enjoying the water and rocks.

 Seussical the Musical...Sofie and Kendal
Pedicures...Mom, Jennifer, Sofie, Lindsay and Kendal
Lindsay, Kendal and Brookie Cookie...adorable!
Hanging with her friends from Taper...
Lindsay, Kendal, Sammi, Riley and Sofie
at the Iacono's house for some crafts and
cupcake decorating...
oh and some shimmer tattooing...
which was out of control...
this was the before photo...
Lindsay ended up with 17 shimmer tattoos...
17 that I had to painstakingly remove...
we now have a 2 shimmer policy...
woe...is all I can say about that experience.

Disneyland Holiday Adventure

After an amazing Nutcracker weekend of performances the girls were surprised with a trip
to the Happiest Place on Earth.
Surprise number two was the appearance of their favorite Auntie in the whole world.
Surprise number three was a special lunch with the princesses
at Ariel's Grotto in California Adventure.

A surprise for me was the sighting of my current student Lily
and her family, at the table next to us during our lunch with
the princesses. They too were playing hookie! :)
There was face painting...
 bear hugging holiday fun...
at the place we love best!

Nutcracker 2012

What an amazing experience for both girls.
Three performances in two days
(well, minus Kendal's stomach flu episode that knocked her out of two performances,
will spare the gory details).
They loved it so much that we listen to the Nutcracker music in our house each day...
both girls having visions of being the sugar plum fairy some day.

Remembering Nona

Nona 11/19/18 - 6/6/11

You would have been 94 last Monday.
We miss you!
Each time I make star soup...
the girls always talk about how delicious your soup was,
and how they would eat bowl after bowl.
Each time we drive down the street where you lived,
someone brings up your name.
There are plenty of questions about
why we can't see you anymore.
Both girls know you are always in their hearts
and watching over us from heaven.
We long to see your beautiful face,
smell your sweet perfume,
hear your distinctive voice,
and feel your strong embrace.
We are comforted knowing you are with dida
and that the two of you were finally able to reunite.
We celebrated you by sharing our
fondest memories.
We love you and miss you tremendously each day!

Park Play Dates

We had a beautiful day at the park yesterday with friends.

Kendal and Shannon
Pre-School, Dance and Nutcracker Buddies...
Bon-Bon and Bon-Bon
Andria, Kassi, Marina, Riley and Lindsay
 Silly girls...

 Kassi and Lindsay
Kassi is moving to Washington DC next week...
we're sad to see she and her family go.
What a sweet and beautiful girl.
Marina, Kassi, Lindsay and Riley
all met in Kindergarten last year.
We stayed at the park until dark...it was chilly,
but the fun was keeping everyone warm.

My Grandma Frka

My Grandma, Stefanie Ann Frka, was a wonderful woman and a fantastic grandma.
My brother and I referred to her when we were small, as Jackie's Grandma...
Jackie was my grandparent's dog when we were young...
hence the name Jackie's Grandma.
My other grandmother had a dog named Sam...so of course she was Sam's Grandma...
Funny how names are created.
We currently live in my late grandparent's home.
Which brings back so many memories of the times I spent with she and my grandfather Ante (Tony).
My grandma was an incredible baker and cook.
I learned so much from her.
So many of my memories are of us in her kitchen and dining room.
She made some fabulous things.
When my brother and I would spend the night as kids,
she would make homemade hot fudge...such treat.
I recall having pudding with a hard shell of chocolate across the top.
Some of her favorites were tapioca, pecan rolls, pound cake, puffed pastry,
and her famous chiffon cakes.
Her maple chiffon with toasted slivered almonds was amazing.
I have yet to try making it...
It's recipe is very intimidating.
I watched her make it a ton of times too.
She would make that three layered delightful masterpiece
for birthdays and special occasions.
When I bake with my girls, I always think of her.
I am so sad she was never able to meet and know them...or my husband.
We use to laugh about my grandpa getting all edgy and irritable at 3pm each day if my grandma wasn't making some noise in the kitchen indicating she was preparing dinner.
I fortunately spent a lot of time with her,
especially when I was in high school and college.
I was old enough to appreciate her.
Sometimes she and I would get the giggles and not be able to stop...
I would take her to do errands when she was slowing up...
She would sing little silly songs when I was at her front door
and she knew I was coming to visit.
She would call me babitza...even when I was an adult.
When we would discuss my dating situations...
She would always tell me...
"a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush".
She was an amazing artist and painter.
She painted pictures and ceramics.
She and my grandfather volunteered a lot of their time and talent at
The Little Sisters of the Poor
retirement facility.
They loved that.
My first two years teaching,
she and my grandfather made needle point Christmas Tree ornaments
and Easter baskets for all the students in my kindergarten classes...
it was an Episcopal school,
so that was kosher.
What a special treat for my students.
My grandparents were so proud of their work,
and of me.
My grandparent's back bedroom
(which is now our master bedroom)
was their workshop...
We have many holiday trinkets that were created by their hands.
My grandmother was also an amazing seamstress.
She made my first holy communion dress herself.
My grandmother also loved to make fresh crapes for breakfast...
(in Croatian we call it polichinke(sp))
when I was old enough to drive,
and I lived within five minutes from her house...
I could call her any Saturday morning and ask for breakfast.
She never refused.
I would often arrive in my pj's,
and be showered with love and delicious food.
My grandmother always use to say...
"The way to a man's heart is through his stomach".
Part of the way she showed her loved
was through cooking.
The holidays were always a special time...
and no one left hungry.
Ever.
My grandparents Thanksgiving Feast...was quite memorable...
and my grandma made the best pumpkin, apple and peach pie.
She also would make homemade gnocchi a few times a year.
When we were young, she would let my brother and I roll a few potato dumplings each...
ours hands would be dirty from playing outside,
so our gnocchi would be grey from our dirty hands...
my grandma would discretely slide those in the trash when we weren't looking.
I can make her red pasta sauce.
When I do,
my house smells exactly the way hers did so many years ago.
When she made this sauce,
she would always have fresh french bread waiting for us.
When we arrived,
she would encourage us to dip some bread in the sauce...
heaven.

There are so many wonderful memories of her,
my grandfather,
this house,
 and our times together.

My grandmother passed away in June of 1996.

I miss her.

This picture is one of the last photos taken of her.
(Me, my grandmother and Julianna (my step-sister Alison's daughter)).
I know she is here in spirit.
Especially in this house.
I know she smiles each time I cook and bake.
I'm certain she would be proud of
the beautiful home my husband has created,
and beam with pride about us living here.
Because of her,
we were able to make this house our own.
I'm sure she would smother her great granddaughters with anything they wanted.
I'll keep her memory alive by continuing to cook and bake.
I'll continue to tell Lindsay and Kendal about their Great Grandma Ann,
and the amazing person she was.

My grandparent's home then...
 Our home now...

This other girl...

Lindsay Jane
I cannot neglect to write about my big girl...after writing a week ago about my youngest angel.
Cautious...is what comes to my mind first.
She is no dare devil...
she has to REALLY be comfortable with something
before trying it.
Yesterday she had a play date at the Levine's house with her friends Ryann and Racie.
The have a pretty awesome pool with a slide made of stone...
Mrs. Levine told me when I arrived to pick Lindsay up that she stated earlier
she wasn't sure she'd be trying out the slide this time around...
but...much to both of our surprise and delight,
her fear disappeared and she took the plunge and loved it...
so proud of her.

Lindsay's cautiousness also takes over when trying rides at Disneyland
or trying new foods...
the girl knows her comfort zone...and does not like to sway from the path.
She has done so well transitioning from one school to another,
and in that respect she has been quite the contrary.
Kids are so funny...always surprising us.
We spend alot more time together talking...
as our morning 45 minute commute allows us time to bond.
I like that.
She can be difficult and stubborn, but no more than your normal 6 year old.
Lindsay is very caring.
Always concerned about the well-being of her friends,
expressing her worry if someone from her class went home sick or got hurt on the playground.
She takes time to warm up to people sometimes.
For instance...her Poppy...
she took a while to warm up to him...
which was interesting to me...
as he is my favorite person...
fortunately the two were able to bond last year when he use to take and pick her up at school a few days a week.
She enjoyed reading the funnies with him in the car...
and she still loves going to the grocery store with him...
(who wouldn't he always use to buy me whatever I wanted)
Lindsay likes making lists.
When accompanying Popster to the market...
she loves having a list with her.
When we went to Disneyland in October,
She had her list of things we needed to do while there.
Lindsay loves animals...
and has a mountain of stuffed animals in her room...
but is always asking for more.
She has recently become a Daisy...and is taking her pledge very seriously,
and she constantly asks me what a "good Samaritan" does.
She is going to be a mouse in the Nutcracker...and practiced her "prancing" diligently.
We love our big girl...
She's a great big sister

and our lives changed for the better the day she joined our family.
xoxo
